Senegal has been granted observer membership status within the Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF), marking its entry into the esteemed consortium of major gas producers.
The unanimous decision, reached by all 19 member countries on March 1 in Algeria, was met with approval by Senegal’s Minister of Petroleum and Energy, Antoine Felix Diome, highlighting its potential for fostering collaboration and mutual assistance among members.
The Minister also noted the strong collaboration existing between the GECF and the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), suggesting that Senegal’s inclusion in the GECF sets the stage for its eventual accession to OPEC.
Senegal is actively pursuing integration into OPEC for its oil sector. He projected that Senegal’s membership in OPEC would be formalized with the expected signing of the cooperation charter in June, marking a significant milestone for the country as an important player in global oil exports. “Senegal’s candidacy is on track. A meeting of OPEC is scheduled to take place in Vienna next June,”
