The Mamelles Desalination Plant in Dakar is 40% complete according to Minister of Water and Sanitation, Serigne Mbaye Thiam. Construction progress is on track to finish civil works by late 2024 or early 2025, with testing slated for June 2025.
The desalination plant, financed by the Senegalese government through a concessional loan from the Japan International Cooperation Agency worth $23 million, aims to produce 100,000 m3 of water per day, addressing Dakar’s water needs.
“The first phase will be operational in June 2025, injecting 50,000 m3 per day into the network,” Thiam said, adding that the project’s social aspect, supporting local professionals in fisheries and agriculture sectors as part of the corporate social responsibility initiatives associated with the desalination project.
