Senegalese transportation service the Executive Council of Urban Transports of Dakar (CETUD) and intergovernmental organization the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to promote sustainable urban mobility in Dakar.
Under the MoU, which falls in line with Senegal’s Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan, the two institutions will establish a cooperation framework that focuses on supporting governance while improving local capacity building in the city’s transport sector.
“There are still major challenges to be met in decarbonizing transport,” stated Managing Director of CETUD Thierno Birahim, adding, “This partnership will be extremely important in that it will give new impetus to the planning framework, but above all to the major challenge of financing green mobility.”
Three priority areas of cooperation have been retained within the framework of the MoU, which include technical assistance in policymaking; support for the implementation of sustainable mobility project; and capacity building and knowledge sharing.
As part of Senegal’s Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan, CETUD inaugurated Dakar’s Bus Rapid Transit system in January, which serves an average 300,000 passengers per day.
Meanwhile, development of the Dakar Regional Express Train is currently in its second phase. Set to mitigate 92,000 tons of CO2 emissions per year, the $57 million project involves the construction of 19km of railway infrastructure to the Blaise Diagne International Airport, situated approximately 50km from Dakar.
