The African Development Bank (AfDB) has secured over $18 million from multilateral environmental fund the Global Environment Facility (GEF) to implement two sustainability projects.
Under the funding package, $10.6 million will be allocated to fostering climate resilience in the Zambezi River Basin and $7.8 million will go toward managing electronic waste (e-waste) in Somalia, Djibouti and Ethiopia.
The Zambezi project aims to improve collaborative management of water, energy, food and environmental resources across eight countries: Angola, Botswana, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe. Additionally, the project is designed to benefit millions by improving agriculture, fisheries and dam operations – emphasizing transboundary cooperation, integrated planning and adaptive management to enhance resilience and ecosystem health
Meanwhile, the $60-million Global Electronics Management program – Horn of Africa Regional Child Project – aims to reduce e-waste generation and promote circularity in the electronics sector of developing countries.
“Through these projects, the AfDB continues to lead the way in promoting environmental sustainability and resilience, driving positive change for both people and the planet,” said AfDB Director of Climate Change and Green Growth, Anthony Nyong.
