The African Development Bank (AfDB) has urged for increased political coordination to commence construction of the Inga 3 dam in the Democratic Republic of Congo, as emphasized by AfDB Group President Dr. Akinwumi Adesina.
The Inga 3 dam project has the capacity to provide power to between 12 to 15 central and southern African countries, while also potentially alleviating South Africa’s energy deficit. To fund this project, financing from various banks, including the AfDB, has been under consideration.
“While South Africa is Africa’s largest industrialized economy, it continues to face challenges in its energy sector, causing a drop in its industrial output, contracting of the GDP and job creation, and this is also having an impact on the region,” Adesina stated.
