Independent oil and gas firm Wintershall Dea and its license partners have produced first gas at the ED-2X ST1 well, located in the East Damanhur block in Egypt’s onshore Nile Delta basin.
The well is situated roughly 3km from the Disouq conventional gas field, which is operated by Witnershall Dea and state-owned gas entity the Egyptian Natural Gas Holding Company, through the DISOUCO joint venture (JV). The ED-2X ST1 well’s proximity to the field has supported its quick tie-back and is currently producing approximately 10 million standard cubic feet of natural gas per day.
“Bringing this well into production safely and efficiently enables us to deliver additional energy at a time when it is much needed in Egypt,” stated Wintershall CEO, Dawn Summers.
Wintershall Dea and its partners commenced exploration of the East Damanhur field in November 2021 and announced the discovery of gas in January 2023 through the drilling of the ED-2X ST1 well.
“We are committed to maintaining production levels while implementing emission reduction programs in Egypt,” stated Wintershall Dea Senior Vice President and Managing Director for Egypt, Sameh Sabry, adding, “By achieving zero routine flaring at the DISOUCO JV and now with first gas for the ED-2X ST1 well at East Damanhur, we are delivering on both.”
Wintershall Dea owns a 40% stake in the Damahur block and serves as operator, while independent exploration and production companies, Cheiron Energy and INA, hold a 40% and 20% interest, respectively.
