H.E. Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, President of Turkey, visited Senegal on Monday, February 21, 2022, as part of a three nation, four-day diplomatic tour in Africa. Having visited the Democratic Republic of the Congo first, the President travelled to Senegal and then Guinea-Bissau to enhance Turkish-Africa relations and strengthen his country’s presence across the continent.
In Senegal, H.E. President Erdoğan attended the opening ceremony of the Dakar Olympic Stadium – constructed by a Turkish company – as well as opened the new Turkish Embassy Building in Dakar. Cooperation between Turkey and Senegal has developed over the years, with extensive trade, multiple projects and a long history of strong diplomatic ties between the two countries. The visit represented the fifth by the President to Senegal.
Meanwhile, on the third leg of the tour, the President visited Guinea-Bissau – representing his first visit to the country. H.E. President Erdoğan has visited Africa 40 times, opening nearly 40 embassies and strengthening trade. To date, Turkey has increased trade with Africa from $2 billion to nearly $25 billion, with the President’s visit serving to enhance these levels further.
