Turkey has announced plans for a deep-sea oil drilling venture off Somalia’s coast, set to begin in 2025.
Turkish Energy Minister Alparslan Bayraktar announced the initiative, which stems from a recent agreement between Turkey and Somalia on offshore oil and natural gas cooperation. This agreement builds on existing ties between the two nations, including a defense pact signed earlier this year.
“There is a place on the Somali seaside we consider may have oil reserves. We will start seismic work, we want to do deep sea drilling in 2025,” Bayraktar said.
Bilateral trade has been on the rise, with Turkey’s investments in Somalia reaching $100 million, including key infrastructure projects such as the Mogadishu International Airport and Sea Port operated by Turkish firms.
