Tunisia’s Prime Minister, H.E. Youssef Chahed announced that production has started in the Nawara natural gas field, southern Tataouine Governorate, on Wednesday.
The field is owned by the Tunisian Company of Petroleum Activities (ETAP), in partnership with the Austrian OMV Group, with an investment of some $1.25 billion. The field’s potential of output is projected at 2,7 million cubic meters of gas per day, an extra 50% of national gas production.
“It is a historic day in Tunisia … a project worth 3.5 billion dinar ($1.25 billion) has started, with capacity production of 2.7 million cubic meters of gas per day,” said Minister Chahed.
Tunisia’s natural gas production will raise to about 65,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day and will reduce the country’s energy deficit by 20% and the trade deficit by 7%. The project will also boost economic growth by 1%.
