Transnet Pipelines (TPL), a subsidiary of state-owned Transnet, has launched a call for expressions of interest (EOI) to repurpose the Lilly Gas Pipeline, transitioning it from transporting Methane Rich Gas (MRG) to Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG).
The project will involve constructing an intake station near Empangeni to connect with the new Zululand Energy Terminal as the source point for the Port of Richards Bay, enabling bi-directional flow towards Durban and Secunda and debottlenecking the pipeline for future capacity.
Currently, the Lilly Pipeline transports 500 million cubic meters of MRG annually from Secunda via Empangeni to Durban, with offtake points along the route.
According to TPL, this project is vital for South Africa’s energy infrastructure and the increasing demand for natural gas, bolstering economic growth and energy security.
Interested parties must submit their EOIs by August 17.
