Global oil major TotalEnergies is celebrating the 20-year anniversary of its pioneer deepwater Floating Production System (FPSO), Girassol. Located in Block 17 off the coast of Angola, Girassol was brought on stream in 2001 and has helped position the company as a top producer and leading operator in the Angolan market.
As a producing conventional oilfield, Girassol accounts for approximately 7% of Angola’s daily output. Located in Block 17 and with a water depth of 4,477 feet, the FPSO is expected to continue operating until 2034 – when the field reaches its maturity.
Made up of four major hubs including Girassol, Block 17 is considered Angola’s ‘Golden Block’ due to its highly productive oil fields. TotalEnergies produces on average 700,000 barrels per day (bpd) in Block 17, with Girassol’s peak production reaching 260,000 bpd.
