Total and its partners have made a new gas condensate discovery on the Luiperd prospect located on Block 11B/12B offshore South Africa. The discovery follows the landmark Brulpadda find, made in 2019.

The Luiperd-1X well was drilled by the Odfjell Deepsea Stavanger semi-submersible rig, in approximately 1,800 meters of water to a total depth of 3,400 meters. The well encountered 73 meters of net gas condensate pay. The Block 11B/12B joint venture is now testing the well after a coring and logging program to determine complex reservoir characteristics.

“We are very pleased with this second discovery and its very encouraging results, which prove the world-class nature of this offshore gas play,” commented Arnaud Breuillac, President of Exploration and Production of Total. “With this discovery and the successful seismic acquisitions, Total and its partners have acquired important data on the Paddavissie fairway, which will help to progress development studies and engage with South African authorities regarding the possible conditions of the gas commercialization.”

Garrett Soden, President and CEO of Africa Energy, which is part of the joint venture operating in Block 11B/12B, also commented on the significant discovery, “We are thrilled to announce the second consecutive discovery on Block 11B/12B offshore South Africa. We congratulate Total as [the] operator for drilling the Luiperd-1X deepwater well safely and efficiently during the coronavirus pandemic and austral winter season. The Luiperd discovery reconfirms this world-class exploration play with substantial follow-on potential,”

Total is the operator and has a 45% participating interest in Block 11B/12B. Africa Energy holds a 49% stake in Main Street 1549 (Proprietary) Limited, which has a 10% participating interest in the block. Qatar Petroleum International Upstream has a 25% interest and CNR International has a 20% interest in Block 11B/12B.
