Africa’s renewable energy sector is gaining momentum and several major projects across the continent are set to reshape the region’s energy landscape in 2025. With ambitious growth plans, vast untapped resources and growing investments, these projects highlight Africa’s commitment to clean energy and its role in global energy transitions.
Wind and Solar Park, South Africa
Under South Africa’s Renewable Energy Independent Power Producers Procurement Program Bid Window 7, the government hopes to procure 3,200 MW of wind power and 1,800 MW of solar power from independent power producers. Under the program, the country aims to build one of the largest wind farms on the continent – with a total project value of $4.5 billion –, with construction scheduled to start in 2025.
Noor Midelt Hybrid Solar Park, Morocco
The Noor Midelt hybrid solar park in Morocco is set to become one of the world’s largest solar power plants. Situated in the desert region of Midelt, the project will combine 200 MW of concentrated solar power and 600 MW of photovoltaic (PV) technology as well as a battery energy storage system. Completion of the project is slated for December 2025.
Kom Ombo Solar PV Plant, Egypt
The Kom Ombo solar PV plant in Abydos, Egypt is set to bring 500 MW of clean energy to the grid by 2025. Developed by renewable energy company AMEA Power and operating under agreements with the parastatal Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company, this solar plant is a critical part of Egypt’s push to increase its renewable energy capacity to 10 GW by next year.
Sounda Hydropower Dam, Republic of Congo
The Republic of Congo’s renewable energy sector is set to take a giant leap forward with the construction of the Sounda hydropower dam, which is scheduled to begin in January 2025. The dam, expected to generate between 600 and 800 MW of electricity, will be the country’s largest renewable energy project to date.
Nachtigal Hydropower Project, Cameroon
Upon its final commissioning in 2025, the Nachtigal hydropower facility will increase Cameroon’s electricity generation by 30%. Additionally, the €1.2 billion project – funded by a consortium including the Cameroonian government, EDF and Africa50 – will supply 100 MW of electricity to Chad via the Cameroon-Cha Power Grid Interconnection Project by 2027.
Tafouk 1 Mega Solar Project, Algeria
As one of the largest solar energy projects in Africa, the $3.6 billion Tafouk 1 Mega Solar Project, is set to play a crucial role in Algeria’s renewable energy future. Spanning five phases and set to produce 4 GW of clean energy, this project will help Algeria increase its renewable capacity from 500 MW in 2020 to nearly 2.9 GW by 2025.
Hyphen Hydrogen Energy Project, Namibia
Namibian registered green hydrogen development company Hyphen Green Hydrogen aims to begin construction of its gigawatt-scale green hydrogen production hub in January 2025. With production due to commence by late-2026, the project – which represents a $9.4 billion investment – aims to produce 300,000 tons of green hydrogen annually.
