Benefiting from abundant renewable energy resources and heightened global demand for sustainable solutions, Africa emerges as a strategic and highly appealing green hydrogen market. As such, the continent is poised to experience a surge in hydrogen projects slated for development between now and 2030.
ACME Group Sokhna Hydrogen Project Phase 2: 2,100 ktpa
The ACME Group Sokhna Hydrogen Project Phase 2, with a capacity of 2,100 ktpa, is scheduled to commence operations in 2030. Currently in its feasibility stage, the project in Egypt involves key partners including energy company ACME Cleantech Solutions (20%), the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company (20%), Egypt’s state-owned New and Renewable Energy Authority (20%) and the Suez Canal Economic Zone (SCZONE) (20%).
In June 2023, a framework agreement was signed between Egypt’s SCZONE and ACME to initiate construction of the green hydrogen project in Sokhna, which is slated to begin in early 2024.
bp Mauritania Hydrogen Project: 2,000 ktpa
The bp Mauritania Hydrogen Project, with a planned capacity of 2,000 ktpa, is currently in the feasibility stage and projected to be operational by 2027. Multinational energy company bp and the Mauritanian government serve as equal joint venture partners. The project’s energy sources will comprise solar and wind.
Globeleq SCZONE Hydrogen Project Phase 2: 1, 945 ktpa
With a capacity of 1,945 ktpa, the Globeleq SCZONE Hydrogen Project Phase 2 – located in Egypt – is currently in its feasibility stage, the plant is set to be operational by 2028. Partners include finance institution British International Investment (14%), the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company (20%), the New and Renewable Energy Authority (20%), the Sovereign Fund of Egypt (20%) and SCZONE (20%). British developer and investor Globeleq will oversee the project’s development, financing, construction, ownership and operation.
Executed in three phases, the project will comprise 3.6 GW of electrolyzers and around 9 GW of solar PV and wind power generation. Initial focus will be on a pilot project with a 100 MW electrolyzer, primarily targeting green ammonia fertilizers while exploring other green hydrogen applications.
Aman Hydrogen Project: 1,700 ktpa
The Aman Hydrogen Project, located in Mauritania, is currently in the Front-End Engineering Design stage and is projected to come online in 2030 with a capacity of 1,700 ktpa. Partners in this venture include renewable energy developer CWP Global (50%) and the government of Mauritania (50%).
The project’s energy sources will feature 18 GW of wind capacity and 12 GW of solar to generate approximately 110 TWh of electricity, which will in turn produce an estimated 1.7 million tons of green hydrogen or 10 million tons of green ammonia annually.
Jearrard Energy Mozambique Hydrogen Project: 1,500 ktpa
The Jearrard Energy Mozambique Hydrogen Project, solely owned by renewable energy company Jearrard Energy Resources, is set to come online in 2027 with a capacity of 1,500 ktpa. The project is currently in the approval stage and will utilize solar energy as its primary source.
Jearrard Energy Northern Cape Hydrogen Project: 1,500 ktpa
The Jearrard Energy Northern Cape Hydrogen Project, wholly owned by Jearrard Energy Resources, is slated to commence operations in 2027. Located in South Africa, the project is in the feasibility stage and will utilize solar energy. It has a planned capacity of 1,500 ktpa.
Infinity Power Conjuncta Nouakchott Hydrogen Project Phase 2: 1,363 ktpa
The Infinity Power Conjuncta Nouakchott Hydrogen Project Phase 2 – located in Mauritania –with a capacity of 1,363 ktpa, is currently in the feasibility stage and is scheduled to come online in 2030.
Partners in this endeavor include German company Conjuncta GmbH (50%), renewable energy provider Infinity Power (25%) and sovereign investment manager Mubadala Investment Company (25%). Over four phases, a total of 10 GW of electrolyzer capacity will be developed, with the initial phase featuring a capacity of 400 MW.
Project Nour Green Hydrogen Plant: 1,200 ktpa
The Project Nour Green Hydrogen Plant spans two onshore areas totaling 5,000 km² across northern Mauritania. Capitalizing on the vast wind and solar potential in the region, the plant will be capable of facilitating cost-effective hydrogen production.
Currently in the feasibility stage, the project aims for a capacity of 1,200 ktpa and is slated to commence operations in 2030. Partners in this endeavor include transitional energy group Chariot (50%), renewable energy producer Eren Groupe (35%) and multinational energy company TotalEnergies (15%).
White Dunes Hydrogen Project: 1,136 ktpa
The White Dunes Hydrogen Project in Morocco – also in the feasibility stage – will have a capacity of 1,136 ktpa and is scheduled to come online in 2028. Independent investment holding company Falcon Capital and sustainable energy developer Hydrogene de France are joint partners with equal shares of 50%.
CWP AMAN Hydrogen Project: 900 ktpa
The CWP AMAN Hydrogen Project, situated in Morocco, is currently in the feasibility stage and features a planned capacity of 900 ktpa. Scheduled for commissioning in 2028, the project is wholly owned by CWP Global.
