The Tanzania Petroleum Development Corporation, Tanzania Fertilizer Regulatory Authority and Tanzania Investment Center have signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Indonesian chemicals firm ESSA Industries to develop a fertilizer manufacturing plant.
The $1.2-billion project aims to transform Tanzania’s agriculture and natural gas sectors for enhanced food security, job creation and economic growth. The project partners plan to finalize the gas contract by 2025, facilitating the production of one million tons of urea annually. The facility will consume 70 million cubic feet of gas per day and is projected to create 389,000 jobs. Project commissioning is expected by 2028, with full operations commencing by 2029.
The partnership follows Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s visit to Indonesia in January 2024 to strengthen trade and cooperation between the two countries.
