International mining consultancy firm SRK Consulting has been selected by waste-to-energy company Bio2Watt Energy Holdings to conduct the requisite environmental reviews for its Sunderland biogas project situated in South Africa. The reviews include the environmental authorization process, atmospheric emission license and water use license application.
Utilizing organic waste from the agriculture and food sectors, the project will generate electricity for the national grid as well as gas which will be sold to an off-taker.
Through this twofold approach, the project aims to enhance the availability of power in the province while supporting the reduction in methane emissions. Additionally, the project aims to address challenges associated with landfills while creating natural fertilizer to advance the adoption of organic agriculture.
“The Sunderland Ridge biogas project is a great example of a project at the nexus of critical issues that face our society today, including how we manage our growing demand for energy, our increasing volumes of waste and the reality of climate chance as well as food security,” stated Darryl Kilian, Partner and Principle Environmental Consultant at SRK Consulting.
