Commercial and industrial solar developer, Sustainable Power Solutions (SPS), is constructing a 10 MW solar project in Namibia. The solar plant – slated to be operational by the end of 2024 – will supply power to gold producer B2Gold’s Otjikoto Mine – located 300 km north of Windhoek.
Developed in partnership with Namibian property development group, Fortitude, and with a capacity to generate 26,360 MWh annually, the project is Namibia’s inaugural wheeling project under the Modified Single Buyer (MSB) framework – a market platform that allows private generators to transact directly.
Unlike traditional power systems which are connected behind the customers electricity meter, the MSB framework enables the project to allocate clean energy directly to the mine.
Through the solar plant, the Otjikoto mine aims to annually offset around 26,360 tons of CO2, aligning with B2Gold’s climate strategy. The initiative not only positions B2Gold’s mine as one of Namibia’s greenest mineral developments but also contributes to the national goal of increasing renewable energy penetration and reducing dependence on imported fossil fuels.
