H.E João Lourenço has been president of Angola since 26 September 2017 following a 38-year presidency term by Jose Eduardo dos Santos.
Lourenço became the Chairman of the People’s Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA), the ruling party in September 2018. He was the party’s Secretary-General from 1998 to 2003.
He previously served as Minister of Defence from 2014 to 2017; was the First Vice-President of the National Assembly from 2003 to 2014 and the country’s Defence minister from April 2014 to August 2016 where he was designated as Vice-President of the MPLA.
Lourenco served as governor in several provinces of Angola between 1992 and 1997.
