South Sudan’s President H.E. Salva Kiir has appointed Bol Ring Mourwel Kon as the new Managing Director of the national oil company (NOC) Nilepet. Mourwel Kon takes over from Dr. Chol Deng Thon Abel with immediate effect.
Incorporated in 2009 after the Comprehensive Peace Agreement of 2005 and two years before South Sudan gained its independence in 2011, Nilepet holds a stake in each oil producing consortium operating in South Sudan.
The company is active across the scope of all South Sudan’s oil and gas activities, and is responsible for regulating fuel imports, distribution and storage and also running its own retail stations. In the services sector, Nilepet has entered into a variety of important joint ventures with international firms, with the aim of building capacity in South Sudan and optimizing operations.
Up until his appointment as MD of Nilepet, Mourwel Kon was president of Nile Drilling, South Sudan’s first local drilling firm and one of Nilepet’s joint venture companies. Under his leadership, the company drove collaboration on the oilfield with Sudan and the building of local capacity and uptake of technology in the South Sudanese local services sector.
