Awow Daniel Chuang has been appointed as South Sudan’s Minister of Petroleum and Mining following a cabinet shuffle by H.E. Salva Kiir Mayardit, President of the Republic of South Sudan.
Formerly serving as Director General for Petroleum at the Ministry, Awow Daniel Chuang proceeds outgoing Minister H.E. Ezekiel Lol Gatkuoth, who served as Minister of Petroleum and Mining for three years.
“It has been an honor and a privilege to have had the opportunity to serve as Cabinet Minister of Petroleum in the Transitional National Unity Government under your guidance and wise leadership,” said H.E. Ezekiel Lol Gatkuoth, addressing the President.
“During my three years tenure as a Minister of Petroleum serving under your exemplary leadership… I managed to resume production of oil, increase production of oil and award two new blocks to new investors, with more investors interested to come and invest in our country. I will continue to support Your Excellency and the entire Transitional Government of National Unity as you continue to build and cement peace, national cohesion, healing and reconciliation.”
The Ministry of Petroleum and Mining plays a critical role in the economy of the East-Central African country, which derives nearly all of its government revenues from oil. Total oil production currently stands at approximately 180,000 barrels of oil per day (bopd), with the government aiming to reach 350,000 to 400,000 bopd by mid-2020.
