The governments of South Sudan and Ethiopia will collaborate on a joint infrastructure project to improve the transportation of oil from South Sudan to the Port of Djibouti.
The agreements – reached during a meeting of executives and governors on July 6 – provide for the mobilization of resources to construct a 220-km road linking Upper Nile State in South Sudan to the Ethiopian border.
“The meeting presents an opportunity for us to strengthen our bilateral relations and enhance border security to foster peace and stability, economic cooperation and development, address humanitarian concerns and displacement, and enhance trade and investment between the two countries,” stated Minister of Cabinet Affairs in Upper Nile State, David Nyang.
The $778-million project will pass through the South Sudanese towns of Gambella-Pagak, Maiwut, Malakal-Maluth and Paloich and transport oil through Ethiopia to Djibouti’s capital city.
