South Africa’s state-owned Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) has launched a request for proposals (RFP) for an environmental impact assessment (EIA) for the proposed LNG terminal at the Port of Ngqura.
Launched in partnership with Infrastructure South Africa (ISA) and the Industrial Development Corporation, the EIA will assess environmental compliance, including a seismic survey and marine ecology and climate change impact assessments.
“This milestone is a critical step towards the development of the LNG terminal at the Port of Ngqura,” said Acting TNPA Chief Executive, Phyllis Difeto.
The EIA process runs alongside the negotiation of the terminal operator agreement between TNPA and the Strategic Fuel Fund – which recently merged to become the South African National Petroleum Company – to build and operate an onshore LNG regasification facility for 30 years.
“This project is one of the flagship projects which we are proud to support,” said Mameetse Masemola, Acting Head of ISA.
The RFP closes on October 30, 2024, with pre-feasibility studies set to be issued by the end of September 2024.
