South Africa’s state-owned logistics company Transnet has partnered with Singapore – based liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) firm Petredec to establish a new LPG hub at Sentrarand in Benoni in Gauteng province.
Slated for commissioning in the first half of 2028, the project will feature South Africa’s first LPG-dedicated rail system, an intermodal hub and a storage facility.
The rail system – comprising a 75-wagon trainset – will operate three times per week, transporting up to 2,500 tons of LPG from the Richards Bay LPG Terminal in KwaZulu-Natal province to Sentrarand for distribution to meet the growing demand for LPG across the country.
“Our goal is clear: to make clean cooking solutions like LPG more accessible to those who need it, thus contributing to a broader vision of improved energy security, public health, energy affordability and environmental conservation in South Africa and beyond,” stated Jonathan Fancher, CEO of Petredec
The project will enable South Africa achieve its developmental ambitions, according to Michelle Phillips, Transnet Group Chief Executive.
