Energy supermajor TotalEnergies has announced it will partner with chemical manufacturing company Zambo Energy to supply fuel products to South Africa.
The announcement was made during an energy summit in Cape Town on April 23, where TotalEnergies reiterated its commitment to improving integration with its marketing affiliates across South Africa.
“Security of supply and competitiveness are key,” stated Senior Vice-President of Trading and Shipping at TotalEnergies Thomas Waymel, adding, “We want to develop our energy footprint in Africa, which is a big focus for us.”
Despite accounting for approximately 20% of sub-Saharan Africa’s total fuel product demand, South Africa has faced a shortfall in fuel storage in recent years. Furthermore, as a result of limited refining capacity, approximately 60% of the country’s fuel demand is met via imports.
Waymel highlighted that in response to South Africa’s shortfall, TotalEnergies aims to improve its competitive advantage in the country via its affiliated legacy assets while providing additional storage and logistic commitments in the port city of Durban.
