South Africa’s Minister of Mineral Resources and Energy, H.E. Gwede Mantashe, stated last week that his department will be ready to announce preferred bidders for the procurement of 2,600MW under bid window 5 of the Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement (REIPPP) program by the end of October 2021.

With bid window 5 launched in March 2021, the anticipated results are expected to accelerate renewable energy developments across the country, increasing energy security and supply in the face of ongoing electricity challenges.
“The Department is in the process of procuring a further 6,800MW of renewable energy of which 2,600MW falls under bid window 5,” H.E. Minister Mantashe stated, adding that the remaining 4,200MW is planned for procurement before the end of March 2022.
Under the REIPPP program and Integrated Resource Plan 2019, South Africa is aiming to increase renewable energy developments with 14,00MW of additional wind power; 6,000MW of additional solar power and 2,088MW of battery storage. To date, 6,422MW has been procured by the department, of which 5,422MW has been connected to the national grid.
