South Africa has received two grants totalling €32 million from the European Union (EU) to advance its green hydrogen initiatives.
The first grant, worth €25 million, aims to attract €506,000 in private and public sector investments for green hydrogen infrastructure, covering the entire hydrogen value chain, from production to transportation, storage and downstream industries.
The second grant, valued at €7 million, is allocated to the country’s national ports authority Transnet’s green transformation efforts, including the development of green hydrogen projects in its ports, rail, pipeline and engineering operations. This funding is expected to assist Transnet in its goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2040, while also supporting South Africa’s Hydrogen Society Roadmap.
The EU’s €7 million grant will be managed by the Agence Française de Développement.
