Global integrated energy firm Sasol announced the start of commercial operations at its first large-scale renewables project, the Msenge Emoyeni wind farm in South Africa.
Situated in Bedford in the Eastern Cape Province, the 69 MW facility was completed within 18 months and is now powering the city of Sasolburg’s operations in the Free State Province via the national grid.
The project was led by a consortium comprising renewable energy companies African Clean Energy Developments and Reatile Renewables and financial institution the African Infrastructure Investment Managers.
Sasol aims to lead South Africa’s renewable energy drive, having signed power purchase agreements to the tune of 757 MW and aiming to procure up to 1.2 GW of renewable energy by 2030.
