South Africa’s President Cyril Ramaphosa has announced that upcoming renewable energy projects in the country are expected to attract around $21.9 billion in private investment.
The President also noted that the country has over 22,500 MW of renewable energy projects in the pipeline.
“South Africa is undergoing a renewable energy revolution that is expected to be the most significant driver of growth and job creation in the next decade and beyond,” President Ramaphosa stated dueing a speech in July, adding, “We will see more of these projects taking shape across our country in the months and years to come.”
The President noted the launch of South Africa’s largest-ever private solar energy project, which started operation on 20 July. Adding 256 MW of renewable energy capacity to the national grid, the project encompasses two solar photovoltaic (PV) projects, with capacities of 126 MW and 130 MW, respectively.
Situated in the North West province, the project was developed by solar energy company SOLA Group and is used to power mining producer Tronox’s operations in the KwaZulu-Natal and Western Cape provinces.
