African independent power producer (IPP) Pele Green Energy (PGE) has achieved financial close for the 100 MW Sonvanger Solar PV Power Plant in South Africa’s Masilonyana Local Municipality.
The milestone marks South Africa’s first utility-scale project financed and developed entirely by a single sponsor and IPP. The Sonvanger Solar Power Plant will supply clean energy to Glencore Merafe Venture’s Ferrochrome smelters, reducing Scope II emissions and advancing sustainable mining practices.
“This project underscores Glencore Merafe Venture’s commitment to addressing Scope II emissions from industrial operations,” said Gqi Raoleka, CEO of PGE. “It demonstrates how sustainable practices are crucial to the future of mining and aligns with our shared vision for a low-carbon future.”
The initiative directly supports South Africa’s national energy targets, the Sustainable Development Goals, and the growth of the country’s IPP sector.
“This solar project aligns with Glencore’s purpose of responsibly sourcing commodities that advance everyday life and supports the Venture’s broader climate strategy,” added Glencore Ferroalloys CEO Japie Fullard.
