South Africa has announced 16 winners for the 7th Bid Window of the Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Program (REIPPPP) and the 2nd Bid Window of the Battery Energy Storage Independent Power Producer Procurement Program (BESIPPPP).
The projects include eight solar initiatives – selected from 48 bids received – totaling 1.76 GW in capacity, with a combined investment of R31.4 billion under REIPPPP. The solar projects will generate 6,971 jobs, R7.8 billion in local content investment during construction and R2.4 billion during operation and maintenance.
Bid Window 7 of the REIPPPP aimed to procure up to 5 GW of renewable energy capacity, including 1.8 GW from solar PV and 3.2 GW from onshore wind, according to South Africa’s Department of Electricity and Energy.
Meanwhile, eight battery energy storage projects with a total capacity of 615 MW and a combined investment of R12.8 billion were selected under BESIPPPP. The battery projects will create 1,570 jobs and contribute R2.6 billion in local content investment during construction, with R2.5 billion expected during operation and maintenance.
