South African President Cyril Ramaphosa announced changes to the country’s energy ministries in a new cabinet announcement on Sunday.
President Ramaphosa merged the Electricity and Energy Ministries, appointing Minister Kgosientsho Ramokgopa to lead the new ministry and Minister Samantha Graham serving as his deputy. The restructured ministry will focus on addressing load shedding through infrastructure modernization and accelerating the adoption of renewable energy, according to the President. To date, South Africa has experienced over three months without load shedding, since the establishment of the Ministry of Electricity in March 2023.
The Ministry of Mineral Resources and Energy has been renamed the Ministry of Mineral and Petroleum Resources and will be lead by Minister Gwede Mantashe. The ministry will focus on maximizing the extraction and monetization of mineral and hydrocarbon resources to drive economic growth and energy security.
