Renewable energy developer Enel Green Power (EGP) South Africa has initiated the construction of three new wind farms in South Africa’s Eastern Cape province. Dubbed Impofu East, Impofu West and Impofu North, the projects will collectively have a capacity of 330 MW following completion in 2026.
Featuring 57 turbines, eight high-voltage substations and approximately 120km of 132kV high-voltage overhead electricity lines, the wind projects will supply electricity to global chemical and energy company Sasol’s Secunda synthetic fuel plant in Mpumalanga. The projects will also support multinational company Air Liquide’s oxygen production facility at the Secunda site – the largest of its kind in the world.
“Through strategic partnerships, EGP South Africa is proud to spearhead these transformative wind farm projects, marking a significant leap forward in our mission to power the country’s sustainable future,” said EGP South Africa’s Country Manager Manuele Battisti.
Additionally, EGP South Africa plans to enhance South Africa’s grid capacity through the development of new transmission lines from the wind farms. The company anticipates significant social and economic benefits, including community upliftment initiatives and job creation opportunities during the construction and operation phases.
Positioned near Oyster Bay, the Impofu wind facilities are set to generate over 1,100 GWh of clean energy annually.
