South Africa’s Minister of Electricity Kgosientsho Ramokgopa has arrived in Davos, Switzerland for the 55th edition of the World Economic Forum (WEF).
As part of a delegation led by South Africa’s President Cyril Ramaphosa, Minister Ramokgopa is expected to showcase the country’s energy agenda, market reforms and investment opportunities in the sector.
Ahead of the WEF, the ministry outlined key achievements and targets for the energy industry in South Africa. The outline highlighted that South Africa successfully ended loadshedding in March 2024, and that the Electricity Regulation Amendment Bill – signed into law in August 2024 – served to modernize the market and encourage private sector participation.
Meanwhile, it was noted that the government plans to increase the country’s electricity generation capacity from 48 GW to 78 GW by 2035 on the back of significant investments in renewables, natural gas and nuclear power.
In renewable energy, South Africa has procured over 13,422 MW of renewable power since 2020, with investments in the sector exceeding $16 billion.
As the current G20 President, South Africa is set to highlight its commitment to regional and global sustainability by prioritizing energy security and affordability, while driving equitable energy transitions across Africa.
The delegation, which includes South African state utility Eskom CEO Dan Marokane and the South African Nuclear Energy Corporation CEO Loyiso Tyabashe, are expected leverage the WEF platform to engage international partners and showcase investment opportunities in the country’s energy sector.
