Sonangol has officially launched the second phase of the Falcão project – a natural gas infrastructure project aimed at increasing the processing, storage, and distribution capacity of natural gas in Angola. The project comprises onshore infrastructure connecting Angola’s Liquefied Natural Gas plant to the combined cycle power plant in Soyo, and with the launch of phase 2, Sonangol’s processing capacity is expected to double from 75 to 125 million cubic feet of natural gas.
According to Sonangol, the $36 million Falcão project further cements the company’s ambitions to monetize natural gas, diversify the energy matrix, reduce carbon footprint in power generation and create new opportunities in fertilizer production. Phase 2 will significantly increase reception and processing capacity, enabling the distribution of gas for both industry and petrochemical plants across the southern region.
“We want to accelerate our efforts to monetize gas from oil and gas fields in Angola, and we believe that channeling gas to power plants such as the 75MW combined cycle in Soyo will not only pave a new era in the country’s power production history, it will also set the tone and speed for Angola’s industrialization and manufacturing ambitions,” stated Sebastião Gaspar Martins, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Sonangol, during an interview with Energy Capital & Power, at Sonangol’s Headquarters in Luanda.
Falcão is Sonangol’s strategic initiative with over 8Km of pipeline connected to the Soyo combined cycle 750-Megawatt power plant. In addition to expansion opportunities regarding petrochemical plants in the future, the project is expected to create over 300 new jobs, enhancing socio-economic development in the region.
