Société Nationale d’Électricité (SNEL), the Democratic Republic of Congo’s national electricity company, and Kivu Power have signed a contract for the exploitation of methane gas from Lake Kivu, located on the border of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Rwanda.
Signed last week by Jean Bosco Kayombo, CEO, SNEL, and officials of Kivu Power Company, the contract aims to utilize methane-to-power solutions while providing a sustainable electricity supply to provinces throughout the DRC, with a specific focus on South Kivu.
“Lake Kivu has gas. It has accumulated and if left unexploited, it could do damage as it is harmful. This is why these kinds of projects are needed. The first phase will produce 30MW, which will serve as a start-up base to supply South Kivu – the network is interconnected with North Kivu -, this production will be connected with that which we have on Ruzizi 1, 2 and later 3,” stated Kayombo.
