Senegal’s recently inaugurated Abdoulaye Wade Stadium, located in Diamniadio in the capital city Dakar, will be solarized. In line with the country’s renewable energy agenda, the 50,000-seat stadium will be connected to a 2MW solar photovoltaic power plant.
The solarization will enable the reduction in carbon dioxide emissions while serving as a trend for other industries looking to implement green technology into infrastructure and building design.
In addition to increasing regional and international sporting events held in the country, the stadium also aligns with Senegal’s national energy target of generating 50% of the country’s electricity from renewable resources by 2050.
The move to solarize follows both the inauguration of the stadium on February 22, 2022, as well as the recent win by the Senegalese soccer team at the Africa Cup of Nations on February 6, 2022.
Constructed by Turkish construction company, Summa, the stadium cost the Senegalese government approximately $269 million.
