Senegal and Morocco have signed two new framework cooperation agreements in the rail transport sector.
The first agreement – signed by the state-owned National Company for the Management of the Senegal Regional Express Train (SEN-TER-SA) and Morocco’s National Office of Railways – aims to boost railway development and explore opportunities for collaboration in railway maintenance.
The second agreement – signed by SEN-TER-SA and Moroccan training center the Railway Training Institute – serves to establish a multidisciplinary team, consolidate networking and communication and reach higher levels of cooperation within the sector.
The agreements were signed on August 29 on the sidelines of a meeting between Senegal’s Minister of Infrastructure, Land and Air Transport Malick Ndiaye and Morocco’s Minister of Transport and Logistics Mohammed Abdeljalil, which aimed to improve mutual collaboration in railway maintenance, air transport and road safety.
During the meeting, the ministers agreed to establish a working group to oversee the implementation of both agreements.
Since inaugurating its high-speed rail network in 2018, Morocco has emerged as a key hub for rail connectivity in West Africa. Connecting the cities of Tangier and Casablanca, the 2,200-km rail network is one of the most developed in Africa.
