Senegal’s newly elected President Bassirou Diomaye Faye announced that the country will conduct an audit of the oil, gas, and mining sectors. The audit is aimed at addressing corruption while maximizing the benefits of projects and resources for the local population.
“The exploitation of our natural resources – which according to the constitution belong to the people – will receive particular attention from my government,” President Faye stated, adding that the new administration will “disclose the effective ownership of extractive companies [through] an audit of the mining, oil and gas sector.”
The audit comes ahead of first production expected at the country’s inaugural oil and gas projects in 2024. The Sangomar oilfield – operated by Australian company Woodside Energy – will yield approximately 100,000 barrels per day while the Greater Tortue Ahmeyim project – jointly operated by energy majors bp and Kosmos Energy – will produce 2.3 million tons of LNG per annum in its first phase.
