The South African National Energy Development Institute (SANEDI) has provided an analysis and overview on the BRICS 2023 Energy Transition Skills Report. The report offers insight into the strategies required by BRICS countries to participate in the global energy transition.
Announced by SANEDI CEO Dr. Titus Mathe on May 22, the analysis explored key areas for collaboration by BRICS members to advance the labor market within the energy sector, promote energy education and unlock capacity building and socioeconomic development.
“BRICS countries account for one-third of global energy production and consumption, sharing half of global labor resources in the energy sector,” he said.
It was noted during the overview that key areas for collaboration include policy coordination, skills development and research and technology cooperation. Dr. Mathe called on BRICS members to address common energy challenges and harmonize their energy-related policies.
Meanwhile, collaborative efforts to build human resource capacity in the energy sector was noted as an important drive to promote sustainable energy development and enhanced energy security. Dr. Mathe noted that joint research and technology cooperation in the energy sector is poised to enable BRICS countries to innovate and adopt advanced solutions for energy production, distribution and consumption.
The report notes that diversification of energy sources will include traditional energy sources as well as a joint focus on deploying renewable energy. Furthermore, cooperation in the development and improvement of energy infrastructure – including pipelines, power grids and storage facilities – is poised to meet the member-countries’ energy requirements while fostering the mechanisms required to drive the energy transition.
