Oil and gas company ReconAfrica has announced that drilling at the first Damara Fold Belt well – the Naingopo Prospect onshore Namibia – is set for June 2024. The announcement comes as the company undergoes major civil works at the well, which include site access roads and well pad construction.
The exploration well will be drilled to a depth of approximately 3,800m and target an estimated 163 million barrels of oil resources and 843 billion cubic feet of natural gas. The figures are based on the most recent prospective resources report prepared by petroleum property analysis company Netherland, Sewell & Associates in March 2024.
“All major equipment has been ordered in the country or transit to Namibia,” stated ReconAfrica CEO Brian Reinsborough. “Our drilling teams are now in Namibia with the Jarvie-1 drilling rig undergoing routine maintenance and certification ahead of its planned move to the well location in the first week of June 2024.”
In addition to the Naingopo well, ReconAfrica is set drill a second well in the Damara Fold Belt well, Prospect P. The well will target an estimated 278 million barrels of oil and 1.5 trillion cubic feet of natural gas resources and is set to commence operations by Q4 2024.
Situated within PEL 73 in the Kavango Basin, the Damara Fold Belt was identified as a new fold belt province by ReconAfrica in April 2023.
