Russian nuclear power equipment provider Atomstroyexport has awarded a $100-million contract to Egyptian construction firm Petrojet for the El Dabaa Nuclear Power Plant in Egypt.
Petrojet will handle coastal management for the project, which includes earthworks involving around 2 million cubic meters of material. The company will install over 800,000 cubic meters of rock, as well as manufacture and install over 91,000 concrete breakwaters for the 4.2-km nuclear project.
Twenty percent of the work in the project’s first phase will involve local Egyptian firms, increasing to 35% by phase four.
Set to be the first major nuclear power plant in Egypt, El Daaba will generate 4,800 MW of electricity, supplying approximately 10% of Egypt’s power needs. The facility will consist of four reactors, with the first unit scheduled to go live in 2028 and full operations expected by 2030. Russia is financing 85% of the project through a $25-billion loan.
