The Dangote Petroleum Refinery and Petrochemicals plant has successfully acquired one million barrels of Agbami crude grade from Shell International Trading and Shipping, marking its first crude shipment.
The cargo will supply the plant’s initial processing capacity of 350,000 barrels per day. The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation will deliver the next four cargoes, while ExxonMobil will complete the final batch of six cargoes.
“This is an important achievement for our country as it demonstrates our ability to develop and deliver large capital projects. Our focus over the coming months is to ramp up the refinery to its full capacity. I look forward to the next significant milestone when we deliver the first batch of products to the Nigerian market,” stated Aliko Dangote, President of Dangote Group.
The crude oil supply will enable the refinery to commence operations, initiating the production of diesel, aviation fuel and liquefied petroleum gas, and eventually progressing to the production of Premium Motor Spirit.
The $19-billion plant represents the largest oil refinery on the continent and the largest single-train refinery globally. Major construction on the project first began in 2017.
