French supermajor TotalEnergies has started production at the Akpo West Field offshore Nigeria.
The field is integrated with the existing Akpo FPSO vessel, which produced approximately 124,000 barrels per day (bpd) in 2023. The milestone boosts production at the Akpo Field by 14,000 bpd and is anticipated to further contribute up to four million cubic meters of gas per day by 2028.
“After Ikike in 2022, TotalEnergies is pleased to start production of another tie-back project in Nigeria, Akpo West, which will contribute to maintaining the production of the existing Akpo facilities by developing additional nearby resources,” said Mike Sangster, Senior Vice President Africa, Exploration and Production at TotalEnergies.
Utilizing existing infrastructure within the block has allowed TotalEnergies to minimize production costs and carbon emissions, with the project’s footprint falling below 5 kg of carbon emissions per barrel of oil equivalent.
TotalEnergies holds a 24% ownership stake in the project, with China National Offshore Oil Corporation owning 45%, Sapetro holding 15% and Prime 130 retaining 16%.
