Chinese hydropower engineering and construction company, Sino Hydro, has announced the commissioning of the Zungeru Hydroelectric Power Project in Nigeria. The 700MW project, representing the second-largest in the country, will be commissioned in four phases throughout 2022.
According to Sino Hydro Deputy Project Manager, Li Xiao Ming, the first turbine will be commissioned during Q1, the second during Q2, the third during Q3, and the final turbine during Q4 of 2022. With an estimated capacity of 175MW per turbine, the $1.3 billion project will supply much-needed electricity to the national grid of Nigeria.
Aliyu Muhammad Temaku, Assistant Human Resources Manager, Sino Hydro, stated that the project is currently “at 95% completion. Right now, the first unit of 175M turbines is expected to be commissioned in the first quarter 2022, hopefully with the work progress and workforce we have at the moment the target will be met.”
Constructed by a consortium made up of Sino Hydro and the China National Electric Engineering Co., the Zungeru project is located in the Niger State of Nigeria and will have an annual generation capacity of 2.64 billion kWh of electricity.
Notwithstanding the role the project will play in providing clean energy for the country, the hydropower project will additionally provide flood control, irrigation, as well as fishery facilities for the country, creating the opportunity for associated sub-sectors to flourish.
