Nigeria is undertaking noteworthy oil exploration activities in the Benue trough, a major geological structure extending about 1,000 km northeast from the Bight of Benin to Lake Chad.
During a one-day virtual workshop for oil and gas media professionals that took place last week, Eng. Alex Tarka, President of the Nigerian Association of Petroleum Explorationists (NAPE), said the activities are being undertaken by the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC). In line with the government’s wish to proceed with oil exploration despite challenging conditions, the NNPC is hoping to boost Nigeria’s oil output in the short-term and attract operators within the area.
Tarka further stated that the government’s determined stance, coupled with an enabling local business environment, will attract operators to join NNPC in the Benue region.
Alongside the government, the NNPC is committed to reaching the national goal of 40 billion barrels of crude oil reserves overall.
