Nigeria has joined BRICS as a partner country, becoming the ninth partner of the interstate organization and the second African nation to do so.
Nigeria plans to leverage its BRICS partnership to achieve national development objectives by cooperating with BRICS members on trade, investment, energy security, infrastructure development, technology and climate change.
“With the world’s sixth-largest population – and Africa’s largest – as well as being one of the continent’s major economies, Nigeria shares convergent interests with other members of BRICS,” stated a statement by BRICS presidency, Brazil. “It plays an active role in strengthening South-South cooperation and in reforming global governance – issues that are top priorities during Brazil’s current presidency.”
