Namibia’s state-owned railway company TransNamib will launch its HyRail pilot project in April 2025.
The Germany-funded €7.6 million project will convert two of TransNamib’s locomotives to hydrogen-powered engines, falling in line with the company’s fleet decarbonization and modernization strategy.
The project will be implemented in collaboration with green hydrogen applications development firm Hyphen Technical, hydrogen logistics provider CMB.TECH, the University of Namibia and South African rail operator Traxtion. Green energy firm Cleanergy Namibia will supply hydrogen produced at its Walvis Bay green hydrogen facility.
TransNamib is also expanding its locomotive fleet with plans to double its annual freight capacity within the next five years, supported by financing from financial institutions the Development Bank of Namibia and the Development Bank of Southern Africa.
