German Federal Minister of Economic Affairs and Climate Protection Robert Habeck and Namibian Minister of Mines and Energy Tom Alweendo have signed an agreement to mutually support the Green Hydrogen Namibia Program.
The new initiative focuses on establishing local hydrogen value chains, catalyzing green industrialization and conducting environmental impact assessments for relevant projects.
Germany has also endorsed Namibia’s flagship Hyphen Hydrogen Energy facility – sub-Saharan Africa’s largest green hydrogen project – as a strategic foreign project. The endorsement was made through a Letter of Intent presented to German renewable energy company ENERTRAG – a key shareholder in the project and joint venture partner in Hyphen Hydrogen Energy.
According to Minister Habeck, by granting the project a strategic status, Germany will “provide more support than usual through foreign trade promotion instruments.”
Located within the Tsau-Khaeb National Park, the Hyphen Hydrogen Energy project will install 3 GW of electrolysis capacity, powered by 7 GW of renewable energy primarily sourced from wind and solar. Upon completion, the project is set to produce two million tons of green ammonia and 350,000 tons of green hydrogen per year.
