An MoU has been signed to assess the feasibility of developing a green hydrogen corridor connecting the Western Cape and Northern Cape provinces of South Africa with Lüderitz in Namibia.
Connecting green hydrogen hubs, markets and industries across the region, the project also features targeted expansion into South Africa’s Eastern Cape province. The feasibility study for the project is expected to be concluded by the end of 2024.
Signed by tourism, trade and investment agency Wesgro; Northern Cape Economic Development, Trade and Investment Promotion Agency; Namibia’s Environmental Investment Fund; infrastructure company Gasunie; and Climate Fund Managers, the agreement will see the parties assess the technical, commercial, financial, socio-economic and operational aspects of the project.
According to Wesgro CEO, Wrenelle Stander, “This collaboration sends a clear signal to investors that renewable energy is a priority. By attracting green investments and implementing supportive policies, we can accelerate our journey towards a low-carbon future.”
James Mnyupe, Economic Advisor to the President of Namibia and Green Hydrogen Commissioner added that the green hydrogen corridor “promises to anchor transformative investment opportunities along its pathway.”
The MoU builds upon a previous agreement signed in June 2023 between South Africa and the Netherlands to explore cross-border green hydrogen infrastructure.
