Mohamed Ould Ghazouani has been re-elected as President of the Islamic Republic of Mauritania, securing over 56% of the vote in the presidential election on June 29, 2024. President Ghazouani now assumes the Presidency for his second term.
During his first term, President Ghazouani spearheaded numerous energy and economic developments. These include the development of the country’s inaugural natural gas project Greater Tortue Ahmeyim, which is on track for first production by Q4, 2024. The BirAllah ultra-deepwater gas project anticipates FID in 2025 while progress continues to be made in the development of large-scale green hydrogen and mining projects.
President Ghazouani aims to implement further reforms during his second five-year term, supported by favorable economic prospects and a drive to improve employment and support for youth. During his electoral campaign, he committed to enhancing energy access while promoting economic stability.
